Schnell eine größere Brust einsetzen lassen fürs nächste Casting; Algen fressen für den Muskelaufbau, um effektreicher Gewalt anzudrohen. Sophia Antipolis, dieser seltsame Nicht-Ort zwischen Cannes, Nizza und Antibes an der Côte d’Azur, der vor knapp 50 Jahren als Unternehmenspark aus dem Boden gestampft wurde, inspiriert Virgil Vernier zu betörend-beklemmenden Gegenwartsbildern. Auf analogem Material und mit sanftem mediterranen Licht folgt er zwei Frauen, die sozialen Anschluss suchen, und einer Gruppe, die nachts zur Bürgerwehr mutiert. Mal scharf, mal lakonisch blickt er auf die Zusammenhänge zwischen urbaner Architektur und der Einsamkeit der Menschen darin, zwischen der Leidenschaft für Oberflächen und dem Drang zur Spiritualität. Bis zum Schluss bleibt offen, was an dieser Welt zum Fürchten und was zum Lieben ist.

Virgil Vernier draws images at once beguiling and oppressive from Sophia Antipolis, this strange non-place between Cannes, Nice and Antibes on the Côte d’Azur, which was founded almost 50 years ago as a business park. Shooting on analogue film in the soft Mediterranean light, he follows two women who seek social contact and a group of individuals who turn into a posse of vigilantes at night. In turn trenchant and laconic, he observes the links between urban architecture and the loneliness of its inhabitants, as well as between the passion for appearances and the longing for spirituality. Up until the end, it remains ambiguous what about this world should be feared and what should be loved.

Ein Bild wird eingerichtet, die Kamera zoomt und schwenkt, noch unsicher, wie sie filmen will. In ihrem majestätischen Wohnzimmer mit den hohen Kolonnen und der riesigen Sofalandschaft probiert die Frau des Botschafters derweil noch ein paar unterschiedliche Posen aus. Weitwinklig und von unten dokumentiert die Kamera das ohnehin absurde Setting, die Zentralperspektive betont das noch. Kurz läuft die Regisseurin ins Bild, versteckt den Funksender des Ansteckmikrofons und verschwindet wieder hinter der Kamera. Alles ist Inszenierung bei Madame, der Frau des französischen Botschafters in Burkina Faso. Doch sie singt und lacht und lässt sich nicht viel sagen. Theresa Traore Dahlberg zeigt, wie fremd die Umgebung für ein Leben sein kann und die eigenartigen Züge des Alltags, wenn Mensch und Rolle nicht zusammenfinden.

In the meanwhile, the ambassador's wife tries out a few different poses in her majestic living room with its tall columns and landscape of giant sofas. The camera documents everything with a wide-angle lens and from a low position, emphasising the setting’s absurdity even further. The director briefly walks into the picture, hides the lapel microphone’s radio transmitter, and disappears behind the camera again. Everything is staged in the life of Madame, the wife of the French ambassador to Burkina Faso. But she sings and laughs and doesn’t pay much attention to what others might think. Theresa Traore Dahlberg shows how disconnected a life can be from its environment, and how peculiar the everyday becomes when a person and their given role don’t coincide.
